Relationships between pre-eruptive conditions and eruptive styles of phonolite-trachyte magmas

چکیده
Phonolitic eruptions can erupt either effusively or explosively, and in some cases develop highly energetic events such as caldera-forming eruptions. However, the mechanisms that control the eruptive behaviour of such compositions are not well understood. By combining pre-eruptive data of well studied phonolitic eruptions we show that the explosive-effusive style of the phonolitic magma is controlled by the amount of volatiles, the degree of water-undersaturation and the depth of magma storage, the explosive character generally increasing with pressure depth and water contents. However, external factors, such as ingestion of external water, or latter processes occurring in the conduit, can modify the starting eruptive dynamic acquired at the levels of magma ponding.

Eruptive history and magmatic stability of Erebus volcano, Antarctica: Insights from englacial tephra
A tephrostratigraphy of the active Antarctic volcano, Mt. Erebus, was determined from englacial tephra on the ice-covered flanks of Erebus and an adjacent volcano. The tephra are, used to reconstruct the eruptive history and magmatic evolution of Erebus. Scanning electron microscope images and Image Particle Analysis suggest the tephra formed in phreatomagmatic and magmatic eruptions and in som...
متن کاملPre-Eruptive Intracronal Resorbtion at Unerupted Three Molar Teeth: A Case Report
Pre-Eruptive Intracronal Radiolucency (PEIR) is seen as a radiolucent anomaly at coronal dentin of unerupted teeth. PEIR is often confused because of similarities with dental caries. Pre-eruptive intracoronal resorptions are typically observed as radiolucency in dentin tissue, and the lesions are close to the enamel dentin junction. Lesions are often coincidentally noticed on the radiographs of...
متن کاملUsing Magma Mixing/Mingling Evidence for Understanding Magmatic Evolution at Mount Bidkhan Stratovolcano (South-East Iran)
Mount Bidkhan stratovolcano is located in the central Iranian volcanic belt. It is composed of several types of pyroclastic deposits, lava flows and intrusive bodies. Textural and chemical characteristics of plagioclase phenocrysts from the eruptive products volcanic edifice, record complex magma mixing events over the lifetime of the volcano. Evidences such as xenocrystic high Al+Ti clinopyrox...
متن کاملMagma decompression rates during explosive eruptions of Kīlauea volcano, Hawaii, recorded by melt embayments
The decompression rate of magma as it ascends during volcanic eruptions is an important but poorly constrained parameter that controls many of the processes that influence eruptive behavior. In this study, we quantify decompression rates for basaltic magmas using volatile diffusion in olivine-hosted melt tubes (embayments) for three contrasting eruptions of Kīlauea volcano, Hawaii. Incomplete e...
